Gates have been put up at the Flinders Street entrances so no access from that side, but there is access from Flinders Lane. Here is Jenny Griffiths report from a fabulous day at Rippon Lee.

‘Five artists enjoyed a paint out at Rippon Lea, Elsternwick, on a cool/cloudy, warm /sunny Melbourne Spring day. After paying the entrance fee we were free to explore the beautiful property which was built in 1868 for Frederick Sargood. As we were intending to paint we didn’t take the tour of the house but instead wandered over the extensive gardens to find a suitable site.  Janette settled on the front lawn under a tree to captured the front of the house while Susanne and I made for the beautiful swimming pool with its fountain and trellises.

It’s an idyllic spot which also  has a lovely lake with water lilies, rowing boats moored in the reeds, and Japanese bridges leading from island to island. Behind the house is a large fernery and beyond that was the rose garden.

School children who were touring the property were treated to a game of croquet on the main lawn and staff were appropriately dressed in Victorian costume.

To top off the day we had tea in china cups with sandwiches and cakes befitting of a National Trust Property.’
